Poachers Shoot At Humbolt Wildlife Officer

FORTUNA, Calif. (AP) – Authorities are looking for multiple suspects who opened fire on a wildlife officer who tried to stop them for illegally hunting an animal in Humboldt County. The officer was hot injured. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says the warden attempted Sunday to stop a vehicle carrying several people suspected of spotlighting – shining a bright light into an animal’s eyes at night to freeze it in place before shooting it. Fish and wildlife’s Capt. Patrick Foy says at least one of the suspects shot at the officer as he tried to stop their vehicle. The poachers continued firing at the officer as he pursued them. Foy says the suspects crashed their vehicle into a tree and fled. Multiple agencies responded to the warden’s call for assistance but the suspects were not located. He says the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
