Gap Fire Chars Over 12-Thousand Acres

A forest fire in Siskiyou County continues to rage out of control. The Gap Fire started on the Klamath National Forest 20 miles west of Yreka Saturday night from an unknown cause. Despite slowing slightly as a cloud cover moved in and humidity increased, it’s still spreading at frightening speed as it burns through very heavy timber. The area has not burned in recent years so there’s a large buildup of dead and downed material. Nine houses have been destroyed, including 6 occupied homes and 3 vacation homes. All evacuations have been lifted as the fire’s direction has moved away from homes. Highway 96 is open, though traffic is being escorted through with a pilot car and drivers are warned that burning materials could roll down onto the road. Help from the public is sought to learn the cause of the fire. The latest estimate is 12829 acres. There is 5% containment. A community meeting is scheduled for 6PM Wednesday night at the Scott Bar Community Center.
