Investigators Arrest Man For Summer Fatal DUI Crash

A Redding man who had been wanted is now in custody to face a second degree murder charge from a head-on collision on Highway 44. The crash happened on August 3rd just west of South Cow Creek Road 4 miles east of Millville. 36-year-old Matthew Castaneda was passing cars but ran out of room and crashed head-on into a Mini Cooper occupied by two Shingletown women. 73-year-old Ellen Berblinger is still recovering from extensive injuries. 81-year-old Evelyn Blake died of her injuries 10 days later. Castaneda was hospitalized with moderate injuries and so he was never taken into custody. The D.A.’s office says he had a blood-alcohol level of .11% and admitted to recent use of Methamphetamine, Marijuana and prescription pain killers. Castaneda was arrested Tuesday by district attorney investigators. In 2008 he was convicted of alcohol-related reckless driving.
