Elderly Man Escapes After Kidnapping

A kidnapped man escaped his captors in Old Station Sunday afternoon, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies from Burney got the report just before 5 O’clock. Meanwhile the kidnappers were spotted driving the victim’s truck in Lassen County and the CHP chased them for about 10 miles to the Westwood area. A loaded pistol was found in the truck. 46-year-old David Schott Jr, 29-year-old Crystal Rhodes and 22-year-old Hannah Short were detained and taken to Susanville, where a deputy interviewed them and them drove them back to Shasta County to book them into jail on numerous felony charges. Saturday night at around 10 O’clock the victim, 72-year-old Charles Bays, had agreed to help Crystal Rhodes retrieve her car from a home in the Ono area. While there, Schott apparently knocked bays over the head with a rock or something metal, knocking him out. He was forced into the bed of his own Dodge pickup with a camper shell and forced to lie down. He was too cold and injured at the time to resist. Schott allegedly stole his Social Security debit card and forced him to lie in the back of the truck for about 6 hours while the three of them drove around the Redding area spending his money. By the time they got to “Old Station Fill Up” the temperature was in the 20’s. Bays peeked out of the camper shell window and saw he had been left alone so he kicked out the rear window, crawled out and ran into the woods. He came out after he saw the three of them get back into the truck and head east. Bays was taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital to be treated. Deputies are asking for help as they try to track down the multiple businesses where Bays’ debit card had been used.
