Something we haven’t seen for a long time – an “atmospheric river” is headed our way this weekend. Up to four inches of rain is possible for the valley and eight inches for the mountains beginning on Saturday, with the heaviest rain on Sunday and Monday. In addition we could see gusty winds to 40mph. The City of Redding says that police, fire and utility crews will be on alert to respond to storm related problems, and will respond as quickly as possible.
High winds in combination with the soggy ground can cause trees or branches to fall into power lines disrupting electric service. The fire department warns you to stay away from downed power lines as well as any fences or trees that the line could be touching. If you see a downed power line call REU at 245-7000, or outside of the City of Redding call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. If the line is active you should immediately call 911.
You are also reminded to clear your gutters and drains before Saturday, but do not rake leaves into the street where they can clog storm drains, causing localized flooding. The storm drain utility will respond 24-hours a day at 224-6068.
Also, if you need sand bags, sand is available at Fire Station Number Four on South Bonnyview Road, and at the Redding Corporation Yard on Viking Way. Bring your own bag and shovel.
