Police Arrest Man After High Speed Chase

A car theft suspect was caught after a high-speed chase that resulted from mistaken identity. Redding Police were called early Sunday morning to the Grandview Drive area, where a man was seen walking down the street covered in blood. He said his friend had beat him up and stolen his car. An RPD Officer spotted a car matching the description a little before Noon near Eastside Road and South Bonnyview but the driver wouldn’t stop, leading a chase through Churn Creek Bottom and onto Southbound I-5 into Anderson. The chase then went back north into Redding, where the driver left the car on Jewell Lane and took off on foot. 37-year-old James Estes was found hiding in someone’s backyard. It turned out he was unrelated to the earlier case. He had a felony warrant for car theft and the car he was driving had been stolen from Chico. The assault and carjacking suspect is apparently still at large.
