High River Flows Causing Flooding Downriver

Although the Sacramento River was already swelled well beyond its banks, releases from Keswick Dam were increased Monday to an unprecedented 79,000 cubic feet per second. That increase began at One O’clock Monday afternoon. The previous maximum release was 70,000 CFS., which was also done in 1997. With runoff pouring into Lake Shasta at high volume and another storm on the way, the Bureau of Reclamation has been trying to keep the water from cresting the dam. The Sacramento River is completely closed to boating and other recreational activities until further notice. Emergency personnel have been checking low lying areas to be sure people are ready for the rising waters. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office on Park Marina Drive is closed until the water subsides.
