Flooding Expected As River Releases Remain High

The Bureau of Reclamation plans to maintain high releases to prevent Lake Shasta from cresting the dam. It’s only happened a couple of times in the dam’s history. It’s now about 13 feet from the top but the bureau has to be sure outflows exceed inflows from the current rainfall. Releases from Keswick Dam were increased at Noon Tuesday to 70,000 CFS. The releases are expected to remain at 70,000 CFS until Noon Wednesday. The Sacramento River is still closed to boating and other recreational activities until further notice. As the water rises again, sandbagging may be necessary. Locations of sand and bags are on our Facebook page. Flooding was a major concern to the south over the weekend. About 200 people were evacuated from Maxwell on Saturday in flooding that spread across Interstate Five. The freeway had more than a foot of water on it, causing traffic to back up bumper-to-bumper for 30 miles to the north of Williams. Dozens of mobile homes also had to be evacuated from trailer parks in the Corning and Gerber areas. Saturday morning a 45-year-old woman drove around a road closure sign in Orland and the swift water swept her car away. Nicole Dufour was later found dead in her car, presumed drowned.
