City Council Delays Decision On Downtown Property

It will be at least 12 months before anything is done with two city-owned parking lots in Downtown Redding. The city council has declined to sell the property until a downtown specific plan is finalized and the fate of another nearby historic property is decided. The lots on California and Shasta Streets are among a number of parcels that the Redding Area Bus Authority wants to acquire as part of it’s downtown complex. RABA already owns the adjacent property. Known for its rather seedy past, it’s called the Bell Room, and several groups have been lobbying to preserve the building before RABA demolishes it. The council, having no authority to demand RABA save the building, discussed tying the sale of the adjacent parking lots to an agreement not to tear it down, but that motion failed. So instead they agreed not to sell the property until the downtown specific plan is complete later this year. At that time they should have a better idea of zoning and proposed uses for other nearby properties including the former police station across the street, which itself is being eyed as a commercial site by a developer. But it seems as if for now it is a wait and see game for all involved until that downtown specific plan is finalized.
