Police Body Cameras & Business Signs Topics For Council

Business signs will be a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Redding City Council meeting. The developer of a shopping center at South Bonnyview and Churn Creek Road wants a sign that faces Interstate Five and stands 80 feet tall and has an area of 550 square feet. The current limit is 40 feet high and 200 square feet. That’s been the standard since 1991, though larger signs were allowed twice since then. A new sign ordinance will also be discussed that would allow signs up to 60 feet high and 400 square feet, as long as they’re within 1000 feet of the freeway.

The status of body-worn cameras for Redding Police Officers is up in the air due to funding concerns. On Tuesday night the city council will discuss the matter. 3 years ago the council allocated $250,000 from asset forfeiture funds to buy the cameras and the needed storage capacity. Chief Robert Paoletti wanted to launch a 6 month pilot program to test various camera systems. A tight budget now calls into question whether there will be money for personnel to manage the data. The council needs to decide whether to move forward or scrap the plan and use the money for something else the police department can use.
