Young Corning Man Sentenced To 9 Years In Prison

An 18-year-old Corning man has been sentenced to prison for a fight that turned into a kidnapping. On November 27th Marco Antonio Oveido and another man had been traveling around the Corning area in a pickup truck along with 18-year-old Efren Castillo and his 16-year-old brother. The pickup belonged to Castillo. Oveido and his friend got into an argument with the brothers and the 16-year-old was stabbed three times. He was able to escape the pickup and sought help at a home on Mary Street in Corning. He was treated at a hospital for knife wounds to his head and neck. Castillo was taken against his will. His family later got a phone call from someone demanding ransom money, but without specific instructions. The stolen pickup was spotted near Artois very early the next morning by a Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputy. A pursuit involving Orland Police and the CHP continued onto Highway 99W until the driver lost control and crashed into the vacant Blue Gum Restaurant near Willows. The driver was Marco Oveido, who took off on foot but was taken down by a K-9.  Hours later detectives tracked down Efrom Castillo unharmed in an apartment in Willows. The second suspect, 35-year-old Esteban Esquivel, fled before police arrived and he’s apparently still at large. Oveido has been convicted of kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon, and he was sentenced this week to 9 years in state prison.
