Dispute Erupts In Gunfire In Eastern Shasta County

An ongoing dispute between two Burney men erupted in gunfire on the highway, according to the sheriff’s office. John Yochum reported very early Sunday morning that Victor Sage Kersten had fired on him several times. Yochum had wanted to confront Kersten about his alleged threats to run over a woman who had spurned his advances. When Yochum saw Kersten near the cross of Highway 299 and 89 he caught up to him and tailgated him to get his attention. When Kersten pulled over about 4 miles to the south, Yochum pulled beside him and was allegedly greeted by a hail of gunfire. Several bullets came close but none hit Yochum, who then sped away with Kersten chasing him. Yochum said they reached 100 miles an hour on Highway 89 before turning on Cassel Road. As they got into the residential area Kersten reportedly started shooting again but Yochum slipped away and returned to Burney to notify deputies. Kersten was detained as he arrived home on Marquette Street, and reportedly resisted when told he was being arrested for attempted murder. Officials say he later admitted to shooting at Yochum, but refused to say where he put the gun, and it wasn’t found when his house was searched. He’s in jail on a half-million dollars bail.
