3 Rescued From Sacramento River After Drift Boat Sinks

A moment of inattention caused a Sacramento River guide to lose control of his drift boat with two customers aboard and they all ended up in the water. Saturday afternoon Eugene Nelson and Gregory Jacobs were with guide Jason Cockrum and they were fishing the main channel of the river between the Highway 44 bridge and the Cypress Avenue Bridge. None of them were wearing life jackets. Cockrum was helping one of the men and apparently didn’t notice that the boat had gotten carried by the current to the east bank, where it hit a tree snag. Cockrum tried using his oars to get out of danger and then tried his motor, but it was too late and the boat rode up on another tree snag that was partially submerged. As the current pushed one side of the boat up onto the log, the other side dipped into the water and quickly began taking on water. Just as the three men grabbed ahold of the tree the boat flipped over beneath them and sunk. The men climbed, scrabbled and swam to shore, where another fisherman picked them up and delivered them to the Park Marina Boat Ramp. The sheriff’s office says the recent high water levels left behind a lot more hazards in the river, and they caution that life jackets are essential.
