Man In Critical In Condition After Stabbing

A man from Willows is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck during a fight at a Redding convenience store early Sunday morning. At 1:11AM a 911 call brought police and medics to the AM/PM Store at Railroad Avenue and Buenaventura. A CHP helicopter and Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to assist the RPD. Officers arrived to find 36-year-old Joseph Anthony Ortega unconscious with a stab wound to the front of his neck. Witnesses said 3 people had fled on foot and police found them hiding in nearby bushes and ditches. 35-year-old Billy Wayne Goss was found in a ditch under a bridge several hundred yards away and surrendered when officers approached. Investigators learned that Ortega and Goss had never met before Sunday morning. Ortega and his adult son had come to Redding to pick up a friend and stopped at the Jack In The-Box for food. Somehow Ortega and his son started arguing with Goss and his two friends. That turned into a fight in front of the AM/PM, during which Goss allegedly stabbed Ortega in the neck. He was booked into jail for attempted murder. Ortega is in critical condition at the Mercy I.C.U.
