Hilltop Area Fire May Have Been Sparked By Smoking Teens

A fire in a North Redding canyon threatened a neighborhood and destroyed one home Monday night. The blaze started at around 6 O’clock off of Arbuckle Court in the Peppertree Neighborhood. The first arriving engines reported a rapid rate of spread and second alarm was called, bringing all the city’s resources. A third alarm brought help from Cal-Fire. A total of 8.8 acres burned along with a house that was almost a complete loss and two destroyed outbuildings. The conditions for this type of fire are ripe right now, according to Redding Fire Battalion Chief Rob Pitt. Juveniles smoking in the canyon may have started it. The two teens were seen by a woman on Arbuckle Court who heard a girl screaming and looked over her back fence in time to see two teens running away. One was a 15 to 18-year-old boy, 5-foot-9 with blonde hair and wearing a turquoise tank top and gray shorts. The other was a girl, 15 or 16-years-old with brown hair and wearing a pink shirt. Anyone who knows their identities should call 225-4141.
