Alleged Arsonist Arrested After Weekend Fires

A homeless man was arrested for a series of arson fires in East Redding over the weekend. At 4:20AM Sunday morning Cal-Fire was dispatched to a field of dry grass on fire near the intersection of Rancho and Airport Roads. There were also two other fires at the base of the back wall of the commercial building behind Rancho Market. Soot from the fires caused about $500 in damage to the 11,000 square foot building. Cal-Fire law enforcement found 26-year-old Jeffrey David Ashby at the scene. He was allegedly carrying items that linked him to a burglary at the Rancho Market, and surveillance footage showed him inside the store just before the fires and at the scene of the fires while they were burning. Ashby was arrested on three counts of arson, with burglary charges pending.
