A man from Sebastopol drowned in a remote alpine lake in Siskiyou County over the weekend. Cliff Lake is located southwest of Mount Shasta in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. 61-year-old Richard Louis Martin was visiting the area with friends and family. On Saturday afternoon Martin disappeared after he was last seen snorkeling in the lake. His shoes and hat were found on the shoreline. A ground search by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and a CHP helicopter was unsuccessful so on Sunday the dive team did a deep water search and eventually found Martin’s body about 70 feet below the surface. The water temperature in the search area averaged 38 degrees.
