An alleged car thief was caught with the help of an RPD K-9. At 2:12AM Saturday morning a Redding Police Officer saw a Mercury with an expired registration sticker leaving the Shady Oaks Trailer Park on Cedars Road. He tried to catch up to the car as it sped away onto Highway 273. The driver made a high speed loop through the Westwood Village Circle K parking lot and then continued back onto the highway. The Mercury was abandoned a short distance away in the highway median and the driver ran away. Abel the K-9 was brought to the scene and he picked up a fresh scent. He followed the track to a ditch alongside the Highway, where 24-year-old William Eugene Schreckengost was found. He was booked into jail. The car had been stolen from Trinity County 2 weeks ago and had license plates from a different car.
