Lightning Sparks 25 Fires, Red Flag Danger Warning Issued

Thunderstorms continue to rumble across Northern California, keeping fire managers on alert. Forest Service firefighters have contained a dozen of the 25 known lightning-sparked fires discovered in the last few days on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Many of the remaining fires are less than an acre or even just single trees. Resources are being assigned as appropriate. Some of the very remote fires are only accessible by smokejumpers.  Some of the larger fires on the Shasta-Trinity include the 6 acre Pickett Fire west of Ruth Lake in Trinity County and the 4.5 acre Deerlick Fire near Deerlick Springs. The Forest Service and Cal-Fire are doing daily reconnaissance flights looking for new fire starts. A strike can plant the seed of a fire that can sometimes smolder for days before flaring up. With more thunderstorms forecast in the coming days, the weather service has declared a red flag fire danger warning.
