Update: Wrong Driver Killed In Crash Near Orland Identified

A wrong way driver was killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 5 near Orland early Thursday morning. A little after 3AM a 2000 Honda Civic was seen going through Corning southbound in the northbound lanes. Minutes later the car was south of Sourgrass Creek, where it met a Fed-Ex semi with double trailers driven by John Wahl of Redding. Wahl was going about 50 miles an hour and was in the process of passing a slower big rig. The other trucker saw the Honda approaching in his lane a swerved onto the right shoulder to avoid a collision but the Honda driver swerved into the path of Wahl’s truck and slammed into it head-on. The 24-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene. The Tehama County Coroner’s Office says the driver went by two names and was identified as Viera Fuentes and Christian Ivan of Washington State. The CHP is investigating and they say alcohol is considered a factor. The Fed-Ex truck took major damage and spilled about 50 gallons of diesel. One northbound lane was blocked for a few hours for cleanup.
