Update: Over 100 Arrested During 24 Hour Crime Sweep

A multi-agency 24-hour crime sweep in Redding resulted in nearly a hundred arrests. Redding Police used one of their shift-overlap days that are generally used for training and instead applied the extra personnel to do a huge clean-up operation. The RPD was joined by Anderson Police, Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies, D.A. Investigators and the CHP, for a total of more than 35 members of the team from 5 O’clock Thursday morning to 5 O’clock Friday morning. They focused on the downtown business district, the parks and the river trail, but arrests were made all over town for crimes seen as “affecting the quality of life of residents, business owners and visitors”. Arrests were made for drugs, possession of stolen property, outstanding warrants and illegal camping. Extra jail staff was scheduled to handle the incoming rush. Of the 95 arrests made, 31 were booked into jail and 64 were given misdemeanor citations. 33 homeless camps were wiped out, after 19 of them had been posted several days prior.  2400 pounds of trash was hauled to the dump and 22 shopping carts were returned to stores. The RPD has posted all of the names, as well as pictures. A link is on our Facebook page.

The operation was still underway at 1:30AM Friday morning when RPD Officers spotted a stolen Ford pickup on north court near Riverside Drive. They tried to pull the truck over and a chase ensued, ending a short time later when the truck left Twin View Boulevard and collided with a fence. 35-year-old Michael Gannon was booked into jail. A passenger was released.
