7-Year-Old Girl Killed On Lake Shasta

Lake Shasta has had more than its share of tragedies involving children this summer. This time it was a 7-year-old girl. Shortly after Noon on Saturday a family visiting from San Jose had their rented houseboat in a cove northwest of Slaughterhouse Island. 29-year-old Phong Ly had been riding around on a rented personal watercraft and was returning to the houseboat, but he came in way too fast and struck the 7-year-old girl, who was in the water behind the houseboat swimming. Ly jumped in and pulled the girl to the surface and he and other family members got her on board and started CPR until boating deputies got there. The girl was transported to Bridge Bay to a waiting ambulance and rushed to Mercy Hospital, where she died. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
