Despite Heavy Rain, Lightning Sparks New Fires

While the Shasta-Trinity National Forest dodged a bullet Tuesday when a forecast of dry lightning storms never materialized, the Klamath National Forest was not so lucky. Lightning started an unknown number of fires, despite being accompanied by heavy rains, which caused mudslides that made many of the fires inaccessible to vehicles. Two inches of rain was measured at the Blue Mountain weather station. Forest Service officials say many of the lightning strikes probably sparked fires that won’t be detected for days.
