Crews Keep Garage Fire From Spreading Into Home

A fire in East Redding destroyed the garage of a home, but firefighters stopped it before it made into the living quarters. The fire was reported at around 5:30PM on Monterra Way, which is off the east end of Loma Vista. Redding Fire Battalion Chief Sean Coleman says the home was mostly saved by the firewall. Coleman estimated the value of the damage at around $40,000. Fire Inspector Craig Wittner was investigating the cause, which apparently started on the outside wall of the garage. He says one of the home’s three occupants is a smoker but he hadn’t determined if this was another of the Summer’s frequent structure fires started by improperly discarded cigarettes.
