Man Sentenced To 8 Years For Kidnapping Elderly Man

A 46-year-old man has been sentenced for the beating and kidnapping of a 72-year-old man last December. The victim, Charles Bays, had agreed to help 29-year-old Crystal Rhodes retrieve her car from a home in the Ono area. While there, David Schott Jr. ambushed Bays, beating him up and knocking him unconscious before tossing him into the bed of his own pickup and locking the camper shell. Schott stole Bays’ social security debit card and forced him to lie in the back of the truck for about 6 hours while Schott, Rhodes and 22-year-old Hannah Short apparently drove around the Redding area spending his money. Eventually they headed east and stopped to fuel up at Old Station. By then the temperature was in the 20’s. Bays peeked out of the camper shell window and saw he had been left alone so he kicked out the rear window, crawled out and ran into the woods. He watched as the three others come out of the store, got back into his truck and headed east. Bays then came out and sought help. The CHP caught up to the truck in Lassen County and chased it for about 10 miles to the Westwood Area. In April Rhodes pleaded no contest to being an accessory and got 33 days in jail. Short is wanted after failing to appear at her preliminary hearing. Schott pleaded no contest to several charges and was sentenced on Wednesday to 8 years 8 months in prison, 85% of which he must serve before being eligible for parole.
