Trinity County Fire Destroys Over 100 Structures

An estimated 130 structures have been destroyed in the Helena Fire, according to an initial assessment. The fire that started near the Trinity County ghost town of Helena slowed way down overnight as a high pressure system kept a heavy layer of smoke over the area. The blaze started just after 5 O’clock Wednesday afternoon. It’s burning on both sides of the Trinity River and both sides of Highway 299, which is closed, likely for days. Around 2000 people have been evacuated from homes between Helena and the Oregon Mountain Summit, including all of Junction City and the Canyon Creeks Area. At last word the fire was remapped at 5,000 acres, still with zero containment. It’s not known how many of the 130 destroyed structures were homes. The fire has prompted Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency for Trinity County.
