Update: CHP Allowing Limited Traffic Through Fire Zone

A schedule for getting traffic through the Helena Fire zone on Highway 299 has been made semi-permanent, and roadwork makes Highway 36 an uncertain detour. There are still widespread evacuation orders in place through the Junction City area so nobody will be allowed to stop or turn on any side roads within the Helena Fire zone. All roads remain closed. A pilot car will lead travelers on Highway 299 between the closure locations only at the following times: 5:30AM, 9AM, Noon, 3PM, 5:30PM and 9:30PM. The highway will be closed from 9:30PM to 5:30AM. The CHP will only allow vehicles that are already lined up, but drivers are advised not to get there more than 15 or 20 minutes ahead of time. This schedule will remain in effect daily until further notice, but only if fire conditions allow, and that decision will be made by fire officials. Highway 36 is an option, but it’s closed most of the day due to a realignment project near Dinsmore. Highway 36 will only be open to through traffic between Noon and 1 Wednesday and Thursday, and it’ll be open overnight between 5PM and 8AM. On Friday it’ll open at 3PM.
