Mexico Diplomat Meets With California Officials, Immigrants

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Mexico’s top diplomat is expected to meet with California officials and young immigrants on a visit to a state that has sought to push back against the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Videgaray will meet Monday with Gov. Jerry Brown and state legislative leaders in Sacramento. He will also meet with young immigrants shielded from deportation under a program President Donald Trump recently decided to rescind. Mexican consular officials say Videgaray will then head to Los Angeles and later to Washington. Relations between the two countries have been strained by Trump’s calls to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Negotiations to revise the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada, demanded by Trump, are also off to a rocky start.
