Deputies Say Intoxicated Woman Injured By Boat Propeller

A San Jose woman was struck by a boats propeller over the weekend on Lake Shasta. On Saturday evening the sheriff’s boating safety unit was called to Holiday Garbor and found 23-year-old Liz Machato suffering from wounds to her right thigh and hip. She was a passenger on a rented ski boat that was being operated by 24-year-old John Reinhardt of Los Gatos. Deputies say that Machato was intoxicated and was sitting in the back of the boat with 4 other people. Machato apparently got up and moved to the open bow seating area. She knelt down and hung over the right side of the bow area. The boat was pulling 2 tubers and Reinhardt slowed the boat down and checked on the tubers. Deputies say that as Reinhardt was about to tell Machato to sit down she dove into the water on purpose. He immediately turned the boat to the left to avoid hitting Machato, and stopped the boat. Machato popped out of the water and climbed into the boat where the boaters noticed her injuries. She was not wearing a life vest. Deputies say that Reihardt had been drinking, but was not intoxicated.
