Father To Be Sentenced To Prison For Death Of Infant

A Redding man has pleaded no contest for causing the death of his baby, who died as the father slept. On March 15th medical help was called to a home on C Street. 31-year-old Carl Matthew Stivason had been at home with his 4-month-old baby girl and her 2-year-old brother. He was caring for the children while his wife was at work. Stivason was on drugs, causing him to pass out while sitting in a recliner with the baby girl in his arms. With the father fast asleep, the infant slipped down and became lodged between Stivason’s body and a chair cushion, unable to breathe. Meanwhile police say the 2-year-old was left to wander around the apartment with access to drugs and paraphernalia that Stivason had left out. His wife, the mother of the children, was calling from work to check on them but she couldn’t get through. She called a neighbor to pound on the door but there was still no response so she went home to see if there was a problem. She found Stivason passed out and her daughter next to him unconscious. She immediately called 9-1-1 and started attempting to revive the baby, but the little girl died. On September 27th Stivason will be sentenced to 13 years in state prison.
