San Jose Man Cut By Boat Propeller On Lake Shasta

A man was hospitalized and a woman was jailed after a boating accident Saturday afternoon on Lake Shasta. A family from San Jose had a rented houseboat at Slaughterhouse Island and they had been waterskiing with a rented ski boat. They were returning at slow speed to the houseboat with 31-year-old Katie Bartra at the helm and 32-year-old Julian Bartra sitting in a seat at the bow. He was going to move and sit directly on the bow but lost his balance and fell backwards into the water right in front of the boat. Julian went beneath it as Katie immediately threw the throttle into neutral, but Julian was cut up a little bit by the propeller. He wasn’t wearing a life vest, but he popped up behind the boat and was helped in by the others. They bandaged his wounds before taking him to Bridge Bay for further medical attention. While Julian was taken by ambulance to a hospital, boating deputies determined that Katie was drunk and she was booked into jail.
