Investigators Say Helena Fire Sparked By Humans

The Forest Service is now saying the Helena Fire in Trinity County was started by humans, though the specific cause is still under investigation. The fire is mostly holding within containment lines, though it’s still expected to merge with the Fork Fire to the north in the Trinity Alps. Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and light rain have significantly slowed fire activity. Crews are still trying to protect homes within the fire zone as many residents remain evacuated. The 18,400 acre Helena Fire is being managed along with the 3500 acre Fork Fire. Overall containment of the two fires is 58%. A forest closure is in effect for the area, and that includes deer hunters. One-way piloted traffic control continues on Highway 299, with delays of about a half hour.
