Man Arrested After Accidentally Shooting Friend In The Head

A convicted felon was arrested after accidentally shooting his friend in the head, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Thursday about 9:50PM a sheriffs deputy was at Mercy Hospital when a Ford Explorer showed up with a gunshot victim. 50-year-old Robert Burlew was suffering from a single wound to his forehead and needed immediate medical help. Deputies say Burlew’s friend 50-year-old victor Beaubier drove him to the hospital and he initially told staff that Burlew had been shot by an unknown person as they were driving on Churn Creek Road. Deputies say that conflicting reports made them suspicious so the major crimes unit was called. After additional interviews deputies determined that the shooting happened at a garage on Telephone Gulch Road in Happy Valley. Beaubier was apparently trying to attach a make shift stock out of PVC pipe fitting for a 22 rifle. While he was trying to attach the fitting to the stock of the rifle it discharged, and struck Burlew in the forehead. Burlew was about 10 feet away at the time, and the bullet did not exit his head. Beaubier drove his friend to the hospital who remains in critical condition. Beaubier was arrested and charged with negligent discharge and for being a felon in possession of a gun.Additional charges may be filed pending Burlew’s recovery.
