Two Arrested For DUI After Apparent Speed Contest

An apparent speed contest on South Market Street ended with a crash and a DUI arrest, according to Redding Police. Sunday night at about 11:30PM officers were called to a two vehicle crash near Riverside Drive. When the arrived a citizen was helping 22-year-old Isaya Hughes of Redding out of a Nissan Altima that had crashed and was propped up against a tree on the west side of South Market Street. Witnesses say that the Altima and a Pontiac Grand Am driven by 22-year-old Charles Daubs were racing side by side on South Market Street. The Nissan driver lost control and flipped and struck a tree. The Pontiac hit the Nissan which crushed the roof and hood. Both cars were heavily damaged, but neither driver was seriously hurt. A couple of street signs and a brick planter box were damaged. Police say both men admitted to drinking alcohol together prior to the crash and they were both arrested for DUI after being taken to a hospital for treatment. The case will be forwarded to the DA’s office to see if there is enough evidence to charge them with engaging in a speed contest.
