Siskiyou County Authorities Targeting Illegal Marijuana Grows

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has been talking a lot about Marijuana, but not much about actual numbers. The County Board of Supervisors recently declared a State of Emergency, saying law enforcement is overwhelmed by the volume of Marijuana cultivation. They’ve gotten State Senator Ted Gaines to join them in requesting that the state also back the emergency declaration but so far the Governor’s Office has not shown any sign of doing so. The numbers of seizures are far short of some previous years. So far this season the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department Marijuana Team has served 103 search warrants and seized 21,758 plants, more than 3,000 pounds of processed bud and 3 concentrated cannabis labs. Those are the raids done on private property in the unincorporated areas of the county.  Seizures from federal lands have been much more productive. A team comprised of agents from the State Department of Justice, the Forest Service and other agencies has seized 86,600 plants. Some of the county’s Marijuana growers have been battling Sheriff Jon Lopey.  A large contingent of Southeast Asian immigrants has alleged harassment and voter intimidation. Two arrests were made recently in an alleged attempt to bribe Sheriff Lopey a Million Dollars to help with interstate Marijuana trafficking. Federal officials set up a sting and recorded meetings between the Sheriff and the accused. The busts made so far this year have been early in the season, with the main Marijuana harvest just getting underway in the coming weeks.
