Boil Water Order Lifted For Sugarloaf Water Users

After nearly six months, users of the Sugarloaf water system near Lakehead no longer need to boil their water before drinking it, according to Shasta County Public Works. The advisory was issued March 18th after the department’s monthly test measured elevated levels of E. Coli present in water from the well that serves the Sugarloaf Water Service Area. E. Coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that’s especially dangerous to people with weakened immune systems. The Sugarloaf well and water treatment system had been built by a private developer and county officials say it was inadequate to detect contaminants. Working with a state grant, a new system has been completed to filter and chlorinate the water to meet current standards. Now that the water is considered safe, the state will no longer pay for the bottled water that was being used by most sugarloaf residents.
