Coroner Releases Name Of Man Shot To Death During Parking Dispute

After notifying next-of-kin, the Shasta County Coroner’s Office has released the name of a man shot dead in a dispute over parking on private property near a home north of Redding. At around 7:30PM Tuesday night 49-year-old Mark Alan Turner and his girlfriend, 44-year-old Barbara Baldo, drove up to City View Drive off Walker Mine Road and found a romantic place to sit and watch the city lights and stargaze. They parked in a turnout off of a driveway about 50 yards from the home of James Johnson. Although the couple was not causing a disturbance, Johnson told them they were on private property and would have to leave. Turner argued with Johnson, doubting that it was private property but Johnson was insistent. Eventually Turner started to pull away and his side view mirror struck Johnson, who then turned and broke the rear driver’s side window with his Maglight. Turner then stepped from the SUV and a fight broke out. Johnson was placed in a choke hold but got out of it by biting Turner on his arm. Johnson then ran back to his house and armed himself with his 12 gauge shotgun. Turner drove up the driveway toward Johnson’s house and when he was 10 to 20 feet away Johnson, feeling threatened, fired the shotgun. It was loaded with birdshot and struck Turner in the neck and face, killing him. Baldo, who was sitting right next to him, was not injured. Johnson was released after giving a statement. The sheriff’s office major crimes unit is still investigating.
