CHP: Woman Killed By Wrong Way Driver On I-5

An elderly woman from the City of Shasta Lake has been killed near Corning by a wrong-way driver on drugs, according to the CHP. Just before 8 O’clock Monday night the 81-year-old woman was driving northbound on Interstate 5 near Corning Road in a Kia Optima when she was struck head-on by a Ford Focus driven by 57-year-old Karen Rojas of Corning. The CHP had been getting several calls about the wrong-way driver and were in the area trying to find it when the collision happened. Both women suffered major injuries and were trapped in the cars. After being extricated, the Shasta Lake woman was flown to Enloe Hospital in Chico, where she died. Rojas was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital and then transferred to UC Davis Medical Center. Officers determined that Rojas was under the influence of drugs. She was arrested for felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter, and then released for medical treatment. The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about an hour, and the southbound lanes for about a half-hour.
