Crews Mopping Up After Truck Fires Close I-5 Near Shasta Lake

Interstate Five was closed for much of the day Tuesday after a series of truck and vegetation fires at Lake Shasta. A northbound big rig hauling fluorescent lights caught fire a little after 11AM near Turntable Bay and exploded. The tractor-trailer eventually burned completely down to the frame. While it was raging, the flames spread to vegetation and also jumped onto a passing southbound hay truck. That big rig became engulfed in fire after it got across the Pit River Bridge and caused another vegetation fire. The smoke from the approximately 50 acres of burning vegetation descended on Redding, prompting a flurry of smoke checks. The only detour was Highway 299 through Burney to Highway 89 to Mount Shasta. When one northbound lane finally opened up around 6 O’clock at Fawndale, there were hundreds of vehicles backed up for miles so it was some time before traffic was running smoothly. A southbound lane reopened around 6:30PM. Firefighters are still on scene mopping up.
