Red Bluff Police Officer Shoots And Kills Aggressive Dog

A multi-agency investigation is underway after a Red Bluff Police Officer shot and killed a Saint Bernard and injured another one, saying he felt threatened by them. The officer responded alone when a call came in at 9:30AM Sunday morning about two dogs running loose and acting aggressively in the nelson drive neighborhood. The caller said they had chased a young girl on her bicycle. When the officer approached the two Saint Bernards he says they barked at him and came toward him in an aggressive manner. He used his pepper spray to repel them and they ran down the street. The officer followed the two big dogs in his patrol car, hoping they would lead him to their owner. The dogs turned into the front yard of a house and the officer pulled ahead of them and talked to a neighbor to try and figure out where the dogs belonged. When he turned around, he said the dogs were barking and coming toward him as he was between his patrol car and a fence. Feeling trapped, the officer pulled his gun and fired several rounds, injuring one of the dogs. The other dog was not scared away, but instead circled around the car while barking. The officer started shooting, hitting the second dog with multiple rounds until he was sure it was dead. After the shooting stopped many of the neighbors were not pleased and reportedly became hostile with the officer. Police say that delayed getting the injured dog to a veterinarian. That clinic was not equipped to handle gunshot wounds so the dog was transferred to a vet in Cottonwood. It’s not known if the dog survived. Detectives say that before chasing the girl on the bike, the dogs had bitten someone and made someone else feel threatened. The Tehama County District Attorney’s Office is conducting its own investigation.
