Mother Sentenced To Life In Prison

A Redding mother has received her sentence for murdering her baby through drug exposure and neglect. In October of 2014 Redding Police were called to a local motel room by management who had discovered a makeshift delivery room, and a baby had obviously been born there. The room had been rented by Daylon Reed and Heather Brown, both 21-years-old at the time. They were gone and officers concerned about the welfare of the baby could not locate them. A few days later an ambulance was called to the Hilltop Lodge for a 5 day old baby who wasn’t breathing. The baby girl was taken to Mercy Medical Center but it was too late. Redding Police searched the room and found Heroin and Methamphetamine. The couple said they hadn’t wanted to go to a hospital because Brown had used Heroin throughout her pregnancy and they feared the baby would be taken away. After the birth, the baby showed signs of Heroin withdrawal and Brown kept using Heroin while breastfeeding. Family and friends urged them to seek medical help but they refused. An autopsy showed the cause of death was addiction to Meth and Heroin. Daylon Reed took a plea bargain last year for an 18 year prison sentence. In August a jury found Heather Brown guilty of first degree murder. She was sentenced Monday to 25 years to life in state prison for the murder plus 3 years for heroin possession.
