Police Say Robber Foiled By Man Nearly 50 Years Older

When a man almost 50 years younger tried to rob a Redding man in a fast food bathroom, the older man called his bluff. At around 4:40 Thursday afternoon 74-year-old Gary Mace went to use the restroom at the McDonald’s on Lake Boulevard. He was confronted by a man who was holding one hand behind his back as if he had a weapon. He demanded Mace’s wallet and said he had a gun that he would use to shoot him. Mace was less than cooperative. He said “go ahead” and then gave the man a good shove toward the exit door. The would-be robber turned and fled. When police got there management told them that the robber was still loitering in the parking lot. 29-year-old Michael Converse was found standing near the RABA bus stop on Masonic Avenue. He was identified by a witness and through surveillance footage, and reportedly admitted to being the attempted robber. Converse is on parole, having just served four-and-a-half years in prison before being released last month.
