Planning Commission To Discuss Salmon Restoration Project

A federally funded project will be considered by the Redding Planning Commission Tuesday that would create an incubator for Salmon in the Henderson Open Space. The area to the south of the Cypress Avenue Bridge on the east side of the river is already the future site for a Dignity Health Facility, though it’s currently going through an environmental appeals process and apparently would not encroach on the other proposed project. Using funding from the Bureau of Reclamation, the Western Shasta Resource Conservation District wants to use 55 acres of the land for a year-round side channel habitat for Salmon and Steelhead spawning. The 3,000 foot channel would be filled with the proper gravel for spawning and two pedestrian bridges would allow access to the existing trails and a new trail to be built. Some concrete remnants would be removed that were part of the old Freebridge that used to span the river there. The site is one of 13 projects identified by the Department of the Interior for Salmon restoration. The commission will also review the recently completed updates of Redding’s Capital Improvement Plan, as well as the parks, trails and open space master plan. The meeting is at 4 O’clock Tuesday afternoon in the council chambers at City Hall.
