If counting birds sounds like a sublime way to spend a Winters day, the Mount Shasta Area Audubon Society has just the event. The annual Christmas Bird Count will be held in the Yreka area on December 21st and the Mount Shasta area on December 23rd. Thousands of volunteers throughout North America take part in the annual Christmastime bird count, allowing the Audubon Society to keep a rough census of bird populations. Beginners to experienced birders are welcome to participate, and should bring along food, water, sturdy shoes, binoculars and a bird identification book. Sign ups can be done by calling 340-0673.
