Deputies: Man Pursuing Alleged Burglars Shot At

A Shasta County man was reportedly shot at as he was chasing burglars who had been at his home. At around 9 O’clock Tuesday morning, Jeremey Hardcastle and John Elger were in Cottonwood when Hardcastle’s wife called from their Dersch Road home to say people were breaking into their trailer. She also said she was armed and was going to confront the intruders but when she got close they fired a shot at her, which struck near her feet. She retreated back into the house and told her husband on the phone that the people were leaving in a maroon Chevy truck. So, the two men in Cottonwood jumped in Hardcastle’s pickup and headed as fast as they could toward Dersch Road. They were on Ash Creek Road when they spotted a maroon Chevy coming the other way, so Hardcastle drove into the path of the truck. The Chevy was forced off the shoulder and into a ditch but powered through and made it around the other truck. As they took chase, Elger called 9-1-1 and explained the situation, but then the call was lost. When he called back he said the passenger of the other truck was shooting at them, and then they lost sight of the Chevy on Fig Tree Lane near Loftus. Area law enforcement started searching and a few minutes later a maroon Chevy was stopped on Alexander Avenue in Anderson. The three occupants were removed at gunpoint, identified as driver Bobby Wampler, passenger and alleged shooter James Taylor, and Raven Carrol riding in the middle. Deputies say they found a 9 millimeter semi auto pistol under the seat, as well as two 9 millimeter magazines and a 22 caliber rifle. The 3 face a variety of charges, including criminal conspiracy.
