Crystal Geyser Gets OK To Tap Mount Shasta Water

A massive corporate water tap at Mount Shasta is much closer to reality, according to the Siskiyou Daily News. The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors has approved plans for the Crystal Geyser Company’s water bottling plant. It would be located at a site that had been previously used by Dannon and by Coca-Cola. An opposition group argued in a suit last year that the Crystal Geyser proposal would be inconsistent with the county’s general plan, which restricts the site to light industrial, not the heavy industrial use proposed. A judge sided with the county and Crystal Geyser, who argued that if it was alright for Dannon and Coca-Cola, it would be alright for Crystal Geyser as well. The opposition, which includes the Winnemum Wintu tribe, maintains that the plant’s benefit to the community is minimal at best because it would use a massive quantity of water for an operation that would provide few local jobs because it’s an almost fully automated process.
