Man Sentenced To 18 Years In Prison For Abusing Infant

A 20-year-old Redding man was sentenced Tuesday for seriously injuring a brand new baby boy. The infant was born January 18th of this year. Justin Mickelson was arrested by Redding Police on March 9th after the 6-week-old was brought into Shasta Community Health Center. Staff thought the baby looked malnourished and possibly hurt so they sent the little boy to Mercy Medical Center, where doctors discovered 10 different bone fractures. During questioning, Mickelson admitted that 3 or 4 times he had lost control of himself and harmed the baby intentionally. He also said that once he put the infant in a sleeper hold to put him to sleep. The baby’s mother said Mickelson hated the fact that the boy was not his biological child. After pleading no contest to attempted murder and multiple counts of child abuse, Mickelson was sentenced Tuesday to 18 years in state prison.
