Not Easy Being Green: Legal Pot Brings Environmental Rules

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California pot growers choosing to go legal in the New Year will face a host of new environmental rules and regulators. State agencies dealing with environmental issues are adding hundreds of staffers to deal with the marijuana industry, when recreational marijuana becomes legal after Jan. 1. A study published earlier this year found that plot for plot, marijuana is more damaging in Northern California’s forests than commercial loggings. State officials say the problems with black-market grows include eroding vulnerable habitat, diverting streams and illegal use of pesticides. Jesse Cuevas, a state pesticide regulator, says any move to regulate the environmental harm from pot grows is a step in the right direction.
