4th Democratic Assemblyman Resigns This Year, Cites Health

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A fourth California Assemblyman is resigning this year, further whittling down the Democratic majority. Sebastian Ridley-Thomas says Wednesday that he’s undergone five surgeries this year for a condition he didn’t specify. The latest was last week. Ridley-Thomas says he needs an extended recuperation but expects to make a full recovery. Two other Democrats have left the Assembly this year over sexual harassment allegations and a third departed after being elected to Congress. Ridley-Thomas, who’s 30, won his seat in a 2013 special election. He’s the son of Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. His resignation, effective Sunday, leaves Democrats farther from a two-thirds supermajority, though they’re expected to retain his safe Democratic seat.
