Public Safety Will Dominate Council’s Agenda

Discussions about cops will dominate Tuesday night’s Redding City Council meeting. City Manager Barry Tippin is seeking two primary goals: making people feel safe and opening lines of communication to improve public trust in the system. A third public safety workshop will probably take place late next month. The private sector wants to pitch in. The Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association and the Redding Tourism Marketing Group wants to donate $145,000 per year for the next four years to pay for one additional police officer.  A separate agenda item would be to offer a signing bonus of up to $7500 for new police recruits. The department is currently four officers short of their budgeted force of 105 officers and departments nationwide are apparently having trouble filling positions.
